Accra, Ghana — The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Ghana has commemorated the 81st anniversary of Defender of the Fatherland Day with a diplomatic reception held at the La Villa Boutique Hotel in Osu, Accra.
The annual celebration, traditionally observed on February 23, honors the courage, service, and sacrifices of members of the Russian Armed Forces and veterans who have contributed to the defense of their nation.
The event brought together a distinguished gathering of government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, military representatives, and invited guests, underscoring the longstanding diplomatic and defense relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Ghana.
High-Profile Attendance
The Deputy Minister of Defence of Ghana, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi, served as the Special Guest of Honour at the event. He was joined by Hon. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, Minister for Special Initiatives, and Hon. Isaac Adjei Mensah, Member of Parliament, alongside senior officers of the Ghana Armed Forces and other dignitaries.
Notable guests included representatives from the Russian House in Ghana. Among other dignitaries present were Mr. Adnan Mustapha, as well as Mr. Edinam Cofie from the Office of the President. Military attachés from Burkina Faso, Zambia, South Africa, and China were also in attendance, in addition to ambassadors and members of the diplomatic community accredited to Ghana.
The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Ghana, His Excellency Sergey Bednikov, and officials of the Russian diplomatic mission in Ghana were also present for the occasion.
Ceremony and Addresses
The reception was hosted by the Military Attaché of the Russian Federation to Ghana, Colonel Victor Dolgerov, with organizational support from Mr. Evgeny Boyarkin. Proceedings commenced with the playing of the national anthems of both the Russian Federation and the Republic of Ghana, symbolizing the spirit of mutual respect and friendship between the two nations.
Delivering the opening remarks, Colonel Dolgerov highlighted the historical significance of Defender of the Fatherland Day, tracing its origins and emphasizing its role in honoring those who have safeguarded Russia’s sovereignty and security. He also underscored Russia’s commitment to international peace and stability, noting the country’s efforts to support security initiatives aimed at combating regional terrorism and strengthening stability in the Sahel region of Africa.
Ghana’s Deputy Defence Minister Lauds Bilateral Ties
In his address, Deputy Minister of Defence Ernest Brogya Genfi extended warm congratulations to the Russian Federation on the occasion. He praised the enduring diplomatic relationship between Ghana and Russia and acknowledged the importance of preserving traditions and promoting cultural understanding between the two countries.
Hon. Genfi further emphasized the strategic importance of continued military cooperation and cultural exchange, noting that strengthened partnerships in these areas contribute significantly to global peace, security, and mutual development.
