TAMALE, Ghana — August 16, 2026 — Ghana’s Northern Region has recorded a major medical milestone following the successful delivery of a baby conceived through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) at the Aisha Fertility Centre in Tamale.
The achievement has been described by regional officials and the health facility as the first successful IVF birth recorded in Northern Ghana, signalling growing access to advanced fertility treatment outside Ghana’s traditional medical centres in Accra and Kumasi.
For years, couples in northern Ghana seeking IVF treatment largely had to travel to southern parts of the country, particularly Accra and Kumasi, increasing the financial and logistical burden associated with fertility care. The establishment of IVF services in Tamale therefore represents an important step towards decentralising specialised reproductive healthcare.
The milestone was celebrated at Aisha Hospital alongside the commissioning of a new dialysis unit, further expanding specialised healthcare services available to residents of Tamale and surrounding regions.
The successful birth is expected to offer renewed hope to couples experiencing infertility while positioning Tamale as an emerging centre for specialised medical services in northern Ghana.
