Nigerian national Augustine Okechuku Maazi will remain in police custody after an Accra Circuit Court rejected his application for bail in connection with an alleged plot to rob three banks in the Labone area.

ACCRA, Ghana — August 19, 2026: An Accra Circuit Court has denied bail to Nigerian national Augustine Okechuku Maazi, the suspect arrested in connection with an alleged planned robbery targeting banks in Labone, Accra.

The court on Wednesday, August 19, refused Maazi’s application for bail and remanded him into police custody, with the case adjourned to September 2, 2026, for further proceedings.

Maazi was arrested following a police operation on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after the Ghana Police Service said it received intelligence concerning an alleged robbery operation in the Labone enclave.

Police initially announced that officers had foiled an attempted robbery at GCB Bank’s Labone branch. Subsequent accounts indicated that the alleged operation involved plans targeting GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank in the area.

According to the Police Service, officers deployed to the area after receiving intelligence about the suspected operation. Maazi was subsequently arrested, while two other suspects died during the police operation. Investigations have continued into the circumstances surrounding the alleged robbery plot and other persons believed to have been involved.

GCB Bank disputes robbery claim

The case has attracted additional public attention after GCB Bank disputed the initial description of the incident, stating that no robbery or attempted robbery occurred at its Labone branch or on the bank’s premises.

The bank said its premises were never breached and that no customer, employee, funds or property belonging to the bank were affected.

The distinction is significant because police have characterised the operation as the disruption of an alleged planned attack, while GCB Bank has maintained that no attempted robbery occurred on its premises.

Maazi has therefore not been convicted of robbery, and the allegations against him remain subject to determination by the court.

His continued remand means investigators will have additional time to pursue the case before he returns to court on September 2.

The proceedings are expected to remain under close scrutiny as prosecutors present further details concerning the alleged robbery plan and the evidence linking the accused to the operation.

Raw Reporters News Desk will continue to follow developments in the case.
