The President of the Republic of Ghana - John Dramani Mahama has observed National Sanitation Day with Assemblyman, Youth, Ministers, Buzstop Boys and some Members of Parliament in Accra on 6th September, 2025 at the office of (AMA) - Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
This activity which is usually observed on the first Saturday of every month was earmarked on 1st November, 2014 as a National Sanitation Day across Ghana because; it is meant to foster citizen participation and accountability in keeping the environment clean, hygienic and also for all Ghanaian residents to put in efforts in reducing filthy conditions that breed diseases and injuries. Sanitation as it is known, promotes the act of intensifying decongestion, de-silting drains/gutters and helps in daily collection of waste, when one adapts.
Therefore, as part of these activities, the President during this function acknowledged and appreciated some set of individuals called Buzstop Boys; whom have over the years voluntarily kept the environment clean and tidy as expected and required. These boys known as “buzstop boys” over the years, kept moving from one community to another to clean gutters, weed, sweep around, and consistently provided awareness and education on sanitation through their social media platforms, for all citizens to also be abreast with the need to keep their surroundings clean and neat.
The President, in a way to reciprocate their act of Patriotism this year, donated essential sanitation tools like - 200 wheelbarrows, 300 shovels, 300 brooms, 300 pairs of hand gloves and a supply of standing brushes, to support their selfless agenda. As a matter of fact, he did this contribution with the aim to bolster their commendable efforts in championing sanitation initiatives across Ghana, and for their dedication to be exemplified and tailored among citizens to also adapt.
In conclusion, it was advised that Sanitation in general should immensely be seen as an obligation for all citizens to execute in the national journey towards environmental sanctity and not only occasionally. On the account that, it will lead to good health conditions among the public and will also promote safety in terms of being protected from deadly diseases, as a result of waste.
