St. Petersburg and Indian Football Association Forge Strategic Partnership to Boost Regional Football Development
St. Petersburg Sports Administration this week engaged with a high-profile delegation from India to discuss cooperation in the sports industry, with a particular focus on football.

St. Petersburg, Russia — In a significant step toward international sports collaboration, Anton Shantyr, Head of the St. Petersburg Committee for Physical Culture and Sport and Honoured Master of Sports of Russia, met with Navratan Jawar, a senior representative of the Indian Football Association (IFA), at the Olympic Hall in St. Petersburg this week. The discussions centered on advancing football development in regional areas and fostering bilateral cooperation through shared expertise, joint training programs, and cross-cultural exchanges.
The meeting underscored a mutual commitment to strengthening ties between Russia and India in the realm of sports, particularly within the BRICS framework. Both parties explored avenues for organizing collaborative masterclasses, coaching workshops, and reciprocal visits by sports professionals to enhance technical knowledge and grassroots engagement. Shantyr emphasized the growing popularity of football in St. Petersburg, noting that over 49,000 residents actively participate in the sport, making it one of the city’s most cherished athletic pursuits.
“Football transcends borders, and this partnership reflects our shared vision to nurture talent, share best practices, and elevate the sport’s accessibility,” said Shantyr. “St. Petersburg’s dynamic football community stands to benefit immensely from cross-border collaboration, particularly within the BRICS alliance, which prioritizes unity and cultural exchange.”
Jawar, representing the IFA’s Kolkata-based leadership in West Bengal, echoed the sentiment, highlighting India’s burgeoning interest in football and the potential for synergies in youth development programs. “India is keen to learn from Russia’s rich sporting heritage and infrastructure. This dialogue marks the beginning of a fruitful relationship that will empower athletes and coaches in both nations,” he stated.
The leaders agreed to continue negotiations during the upcoming St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in June, where further agreements on joint initiatives are expected to be formalized. The annual forum, a cornerstone of global economic and cultural diplomacy, will provide a platform to integrate sports development into broader discussions on international cooperation.
Following the meeting, Jawar toured the State Sports Museum of St. Petersburg, immersing himself in exhibits showcasing Russia’s storied athletic achievements and the city’s contributions to Olympic history.
